HUNTINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning two meetings to discuss its role in preventing future flooding in southern West Virginia.

The corps will meet with residents of the Upper Guyandotte River next Tuesday to discuss ways to control flooding and the restoration of the area's ecosystem. The area was the site of severe flooding several years ago.

Earlier this week the state Supreme Court heard arguments in a lawsuit that claims mining in the area increased flooding in the watershed.

Corps officials also plan to meet with about 50 landowners along Island Creek next Thursday to discuss widening the creek where it joins the Guyandotte River. The plan also includes a flood warning system.
