Banner Staff Report

If you own property that could be affected by the proposed channel widening project for Island Creek, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants to talk with you.

The Corps will conduct a special meeting primarily for the 50 landowners who may be affected by the Island Creek local protection project this week on Thursday, April 24, beginning at 7 p.m. at Logan Middle School, 14 Wildcat Way, Logan.

Spokespersons for the Corps have assured The Logan Banner that no residential structures are located within the project area, and only four business structures are affected.

In January of 2008, the Project Cooperation Agreement and Memorandum of Agreement were signed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Logan County Commission and the West Virginia Conversation Agency to begin the real estate acquisition process for the Island Creek Local Protection Project. The flood protection project spans seven-tenths of a mile up Island Creek, starting behind Super 8 in Ellis Addition.

This landowner's meeting is the first step of the acquisition process. The Island Creek local protection project includes widening the Island Creek channel to a width of 80 feet for a distance of 3,600 feet upstream from its confluence with the Guyandotte River. It also provides for implementation of a flood warning system.
