The commission announced yesterday evening that its cleanup project from last spring will happen again this year, starting on Thursday and running through Saturday in Man.
Logan County Commission President Art Kirkendoll said his home county looks a lot better since last year's free cleanup that was held in Logan, Chapmanville and Man, so the commission decided to conduct the cleanup again this year to make the county look even better.
"Commissioners Danny Godby and Willie Akers worked hard to bring this cleanup effort back this year," Kirkendoll said. "We had such a successful cleanup last year that the state Department of Environmental Protection has increased the funding to $75,000 to do it again. That's three times the money they gave us last year."
The first leg of the cleanup will begin May 1 and run through May 3 in Man at the old Appalachian Regional Hospital. Man residents can bring their trash and debris to the site and have it dumped for free.
"This will be another huge cleanup effort," Kirkendoll said. "Last year, we collected one million pounds of trash and 20,000 tires. Hopefully, since last year's cleanup was so successful, we won't get nearly as much trash."
Kirkendoll said if the county can do the project each year, Logan County should be a lot cleaner.
"We think if we do it every year, the county will get cleaner," Kirkendoll said. "This county is cleaner now than it's been in years."
The cleanup efforts will be conducted in Omar next, then will go to Logan and then to Chapmanville, Kirkendoll said.
"The cleanup project will run three days a week for four consecutive weeks," Kirkendoll said.
