CHAPMANVILLE - The Gilbert Lions gave the Man High School baseball team a scare on Tuesday night at Chapmanville's Ted Ellis Field as the Billies had to come from behind to beat Gilbert 7-6 in the second game of the Class A sectional tourney.

Man will now play Van tonight in the sectionals. The Bulldogs routed Gilbert 14-4 on Monday in the opener.

With last night's loss to the Billies Gilbert is now eliminated.

Man had to rally to win last night's game.

The Billies tied it 6-6 on Trevor Corns' RBI single which scored Jimmy Joe Gibson.

David Johnson then got what proved to be the game winning hit on an RBI single to score Corns as Man took a 7-6 lead.

"We were a little sluggish but we came out of it," said Man interim coach Travis Hurley. "A win is a win."

Hurley won his first game as a head coach.

He took over for Chris Harvey, who recently resigned to take an assistant coach position with the Florida State University football team.

Last night's sectional game was marred by errors by both teams. The Lions committed six while Man had four miscues.

Man got two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Corns.

The Lions tied the game 2-2 in the top of the second with two unearned runs.

The Billies added one in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Man then built a 5-2 lead on Duke Vance's two-run homer to center in the third.

Gilbert added two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to go on top 6-5.

Steven Craddock was Man's starting pitcher. He went five innings, striking out five and walking two. Travis Hurley then came in to pitch two no-hit innings. He struck out the side in the seventh to preserve the win. He fanned five and walked none.

Corns was 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Gibson was also 2-for-3.

Hurley added a single. Jeremy Hatfield had a triple.

Man takes on Van tonight at 6 p.m. at Chapmanville.

The two teams are then slated to play again on Thursday in the double-elimination tourney.
