The Logan Wal-Mart store has awarded Erin Stone of Logan High School and Peter Kirkpatrick of Gilbert High School with a Sam Walton Community Scholarship. Each student will receive a $1,000 award, payable over one year. The Sam Walton Community Scholarship, named after the company's late founder, is awarded annually to deserving college-bound high school seniors or students who will have obtained a GED certificate between August 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008.

"We are excited to recognize these outstanding students and to help to fund their college aspirations," said Dwight Neal, Logan Wal-Mart store manager.

The Sam Walton Community Scholarship is one of three types of scholarships supported by the company to assist the general community with college-related expenses. Erin Stone and Peter Kirkpatrick are among 72,017 students across the U.S. who applied to receive a Sam Walton Community Scholarship. Winners were selected based on financial need, academic records, ACT/SAT test scores, extracurricular activities and community involvement.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has a long history of supporting education initiatives and in 2007 contributed more than $67 million to support local schools and universities, student scholarships, educational organizations and more.
