The recent countywide trash cleanup was very successful.

According to Logan County Administrator Rocky Adkins, the trash cleanup, which allowed Logan County residents to dump trash for free at three different sites, netted 978 tons of trash and more than 5,000 tires.

"That 978 tons of trash equates to 1,956,000 pounds," Adkins said. "Isn't that something?"

Adkins said the county commission intends to keep the cleanup project running annually. It was started last summer by the county commission and received additional state funding this year.

"It's the intention of the commission to do this annually, because we think it has made a major impact on Logan County," Adkins said. "We hope that with the anticipation of doing this annually, people will refrain from disposing of their trash illegally and will wait until the next free pickup."

The commission used coal trucks and loaders and residents could bring in trash that would then be loaded onto the trucks and taken to the Charleston transfer station.

"Logan County Commission President Art Kirkendoll said that this is a sizeable investment dollarwise," Adkins said. "But, we think it's a sizeable investment in cleanup up Logan County. The commissioners think it's well worth the investment."
