CLARKSBURG - Two Man Lady Billies were named this week to the Class A All-State softball team.

After helping to lead their team past defending state champion Wheeling Central in the title game, Man's Marlena Frye and Paige Stacy have been named to the Class A All-State first and second teams, respectively.

Frye was named to the first team as a pitcher and Stacy made the second team as an outfielder.

South Harrison senior Leah Fletcher was named the captain of the Class A all-state softball team, despite South Harrison losing big to Man in the first round of the tournament at Vienna.

After earning first-team status as primarily a third baseman in her sophomore and junior seasons, Fletcher moved to the outfield and pitching mound in 2008 and was named first-team captain as a utility player on this year's all-state squad announced Tuesday by the West Virginia Sports Writer's Association.

Fletcher hit .515 with 18 RBIs and 15 stolen bases and also picked up seven pitching victories to help the Hawks finish with a record of 19-13 and earn a spot in the state tournament.

''Leah is a very talented player,'' South Harrison coach Karson Richards said. ''She came in as a senior and we needed some position changes, so she moved out of the infield and did whatever it took to help the team. Throughout her career she has always stepped up and helped in whatever way she could and she never complained.''

Joining Fletcher on the first-team is teammate Tasha Hall as a pitcher.

Hall, who won eight games and struck out 85, is one of three freshmen selected to the team.

Class A state champion Man is represented on the first team by sophomore pitcher Frye.

Frye, one of the most dominant hurlers in the state, regardless of class, pitched every inning of every game for the Hillbillies this year. She finished with a record of 24-3 and struck out more than 300 batters.

Rounding out the pitching staff are Wheeling Central senior Jen Sparachane, Cameron sophomore Devan Shields and Charleston Catholic freshman Ally Hoyer.

Sparachane went 12-1 with an ERA of .076 and 139 strikeouts, leading the Maroon Knights to the Class A state title game. She also hit .363 at the plate. Shields recorded 221 strikeouts and tossed seven no-hitters.

Hoyer emerged as the Fighting Irish's ace, allowing just 37 earned runs and helping her team make it to the state tournament.

Also earning first-team honors for Wheeling Central is senior utility player Courtney Schrebe, who hit .302.

Shields is joined by junior teammate Morgan Hughes, an outfielder who hit .405 with six home runs and 27 RBIs.

In addition to Hoyer, Charleston Catholic landed freshman infielder Marty Kay Wilcox and sophomore outfielder Morgan Pack on the first team.

Wilcox emerged as one of the state's best shortstops, finishing with a batting average of .516, two home runs, 44 RBIs, 10 triples and 19 stolen bases. Pack hit .407 and drove in 16 runs.

Buffalo and Fayetteville each had two players on the first-team unit.

For the Bison, a pair of juniors in infielder Jessica Blake and catcher Brittany Williams were selected. Blake hit .522 with nine homers and 46 RBIs, while Williams hit .421 with 28 stolen bases.

The Pirates, who finished the season at 18-7, are represented by senior infielder Casey Smith and junior outfielder Stephanie Nickell. Smith batted .507 with three home runs, four doubles, four triples and 17 RBIs. Nickel hit .493 with 23 RBIs and also went 7-2 on the mound.

Rounding out the first team are St. Joseph senior infielder Maddie Pertee, St. Marys senior utility player Sara McFarland and Moorefield senior utility player Bridget Ours.

Pertee finished with an average of .516, six home runs and 38 RBIs. McFarland batted .396. Ours had an 11-5 record, 1.29 ERA and 123 strikeouts on the mound and hit .455 with eight homers and 38 RBIs.

Wirt County pitcher Emma Cox was named captain of the second team.

Other second-team hurlers are Fayetteville's Shandi Myles, Buffalo's Nicole Dingess and St. Mary's Channez Walker.

The second-team infield is comprised of Parkersburg Catholic's Kalya Perkinson, East Hardy's Casey Miller, Wheeling Central's Mary Petros and the South Harrison duo of Emily Webb and Alex McAtee.

Charleston Catholic's Maria Femia, Man's Stacy and Buffalo's Kayla Tucker make up the second-team outfield. Valley Wetzel's Raquel Partridge and Fayetteville's Beth George were named second-team catchers.

Rounding out the second team at utility spots are Gilbert's Renee Kline, Williamstown's Ashley Williams and St. Joseph's Stephanie Sang.
