CHIEF LOGAN STATE PARK - Close to six years ago, George and Carolyn Frye of Low Gap began Pickin' in the Park, a program for local Bluegrass, Gospel and Country Music musicians to come together for "pickin' and grinnin'" sessions. Musicians needed no invitation to come, neither did guests. Just bring an instrument or a lawn chair and enjoy the music.

Once a week, on Thursday evening, musicians and guests looking for Pickin' in the Park at Chief Logan State Park followed signs to locate the musicians, because, without a permanent location, Frye looked for large empty picnic areas to set up in. Back then it was all natural as musicians played without microphones or amplifiers. If it rained, they sometimes moved to a shelter that was not being used. Bluegrass, Gospel and Country Music enthusiasts enjoyed the jamming sessions and the program began to grow.

"The original idea came from my friend Dave Swaggert," Mr. Frye said. "When he approached me, I said it sounded like a good idea. The plan was to bring musicians out of the hollows that didn't have anyone to play with. We'd put signs out at the mouth of the hollow and wait for people to come
