WILLIAMSON - At the May 15, 2008, Tug Valley Mining Institute (TVMI) dinner meeting, the six 2008 scholarship recipients were named. The two top $6,000 scholarship awards went to Carly Branch from Williamson High School and Olivia Workman from Burch High School. Four $750 scholarship awards went to L. David Allen, Tug Valley High School; Renetta Deskins, Tug Valley High School; Amber Haugen, Tug Valley High School; and Kheegan Williams, Belfry High School.

The guest speaker was Bill Reid, Coal News, and he provided an insightful view of timeline improvements regarding production and safety and enlightened everyone about the positive outlook on coal's future. Stahura Conveyor Products sponsored the meeting and highlighted some of the new and innovative approaches they are working with to provide a more controlled and compliant workplace.

Over the last thirteen years, TVMI has awarded 72 students $150,000 in scholarship monies. The TVMI scholarship is open to students from Mingo, Logan, Pike and Martin counties. The applications are available in November of each year and may be obtained from Marsha Williams at the First National Bank of Williamson or from the TVMI website (www.tugvalleymi.org).
