LYBURN - Deputy Director John Fekete had some good news for the Field Operations Committee of the Hatfield-McCoy Regional Recreation Authority recently.

"The North Fork Connector is finished and we opened it up yesterday," Fekete told board members. The system will feature a new blue (easy access) UTV trail for various larger machines as well as a black (extreme difficulty) double diamond track for experts on ATVs and motorcycles only (UTVs banned).

Fekete showed off new signs for both features and explained that putting up the new signs will be a major changeover.

"We hope to see a lot of economic development in that area," Fekete said of the North Fork region. "They have a lot of buildings in that area that can be utilized."

"The Mullens Connector is complete and we are done with it freeing us up for the Twin Falls State Park Connector," he said. "Once Mullens was finished, we were ready to continue to Twin Falls."

Fekete said work on the Wayne County Connector is nearly complete.

"We did all our mapping and we met with local people on the property. They are going to set up a meeting with us and the US Army Corps of Engineers soon," Fekete said.

Executive Director Jeff Lusk told Field Operations Committee members that Greg Porter, a Wayne resident had assisted the project tremendously and that he thinks the eventual Wayne system will be "one of the nicest trails we have installed."

Lusk and Fekete said it's still back to the drawing board on the Indian Ridge-Pinnacle Creek connector as the proposed path the Authority was looking at was unacceptable due to heavy coal truck traffic.

Work on the Lincoln County trail system has not started yet, however more miles of single track have been added to Pinnacle Creek. Potential trail areas have been located in Lincoln County but attorneys have not signed any paperwork needed to proceed as of the May Field Operations Committee Meeting.

Some 20-40 miles of single track (dirt bike) trails are planned to expand in the Buffalo Mountain area as well.

"They are building this right now," Fekete said.
