CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Alice Adkins Marcum, 74, of Charleston, formerly of Mt. Gay, died at her residence July 6, 2008, surrounded by her family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Lincoln County the daughter of the late Mose and Kernie Carter Adkins. Alice was a retired home healthcare worker for 12 years, and was a member of the Harvest Time Church of God in Charleston.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Marcum; stepmothers, Lucinda Marcum Adkins and Ida Browning Adkins; sisters, Ersa, Nancy and Cora Adkins, Pansy Toler, Shirley Malcomb and Audrey Bryant; brothers, Henry, Sam, Bill and Raymond Adkins, and Cletus, Vernon (Bo) and Leonard Marcum.
Surviving are her five children and their spouses, Beulah and Kenneth Sampson, Glen and Gail Marcum, Faith and James Stephens, Keith and Sue Marcum, Gary and Delores Marcum, all of the Charleston area; four grandchildren, Christopher and Audi Vance, Timothy Stephens, Joseph Marcum and Brian Marcum; one great-grandson, Christopher Alan Vance; brothers and their spouses, Virgil J. and Donna Adkins of Logan, Phillip Kelly and Mary Adkins of Ripley, and Nathan and Patty Marcum of Greenview; sister and her husband, Brookie and Ray Burgess of Ramage.
Alice left many nieces, nephews and their families. She loved all and tried to be a friend to everyone.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home, Charleston, with the Rev. Jess Inclenrock and Assistant Pastor Renee Hall officiating. Burial followed at Adkins-Marcum Cemetery, Greenview, Boone County, West Virginia.
