LYBURN - There are some major changes in store for a proposed connector that would link up the Chief Logan Park Lodge with the Hatfield-McCoy Trails.

Last year the proposal for a connector to the new multi-million dollar lodge and convention center was made and the Hatfield-McCoy Regional Recreation Authority did extensive mapping with an initial view of adding a connector that would allow riders staying at the lodge to ride along a ridge outside the park down to a connector in the West Logan area. Three different proposed areas were looked at, but according to Deputy Director John Fekete those proposals are on the shelf now.

Fekete told the HMRRA board of directors that the new idea would look at building a connector at the Fountain Place Plaza, which would then connect to the lodge sometime later.

"The connector project has changed and we will be looking at this new plan," Fekete said, adding that the North Fork Connector was now open, up and running and that Gov. Joe Manchin had attended the opening and stated his desire to see the Twin Falls State Park connector project get started soon.

Fekete had some good news: After innumerable delays, the town of Matewan paving project has been completed. Fekete said the completion will allow the HMRRA field crews to start work on the Lincoln County mapping agreements and other projects. Last year authorities in Matewan had contacted the authority about a problem with dirt and mud coming off the trails into the highway. The Authority had its hands full, however with multiple delays on a reroute of the Gilbert trailhead, which, when completed late, caused weather to delay work in Matewan.

Fekete said mapping agreements should be started soon for a trail system in the Harts Creek area, as well as in Wayne County on the East Lynn project. Fekete said the proposed Indian Ridge-Pinnacle Creek Connector project was being revised due to too much coal truck activity in the proposed area and that work should begin in a few days on the Browning Fork reroutes, as Hampton Coal had been working with the Authority on that project by donating equipment.

Fekete said without their help, the Gilbert Connector would have to be closed temporarily. Additional single track trails for dirt bike riders were planned for construction to begin this Wednesday. Eight miles of trails have been added to Pinnacle Creek, which will be expanding soon, Fekete said.

The Little Coal River system is waiting on a crew to get out and start adding miles now.

Fekete said the Authority will be having another "Fire Sale" soon of surplus vehicles including some trucks and jeeps which will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

"We have done very well in selling off surplus equipment and machines in the past as people read about these items in The Logan Banner," Fekete noted of past surplus sales where an eager buying public has taken advantage of the replacement of some high mileage but well maintained vehicles.
