David "Hanky" Williams, 51, of Omar, was arrested by Tpr. J.K. Harris of the West Virginia State Police on Aug. 28 for burglary and petit larceny. He was booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden on a $100,000 cash only bond at 11:23 p.m.
Earlier on Aug. 27, Williams was arrested by Tpr. J.R. Brewer and Tpr. T. W. Tippett of the WVSP for possession of a controlled substance. He was booked that day at 4 a.m.
The first police report states that Tpr. Tippett was in the Sandy Bottom area and heard a loud noise coming from a residence.
"Upon exiting the cruiser, a man on the porch of the residence screamed "Cops!" The report states "This officer then conducted an officer safety patdown on the accused, David Williams. This officer felt a large bag in the front right pocket of the accused. The accused then advised this officer he had marijuana in his possession. This officer then placed the accused under arrest."
Ironically, officials in Logan Magistrate Court had seen even more of Williams this week, as between his arrests he had attempted to bond out another individual.
"He came in the other day and tried to go the bond on Kara Bragg," Magistrate Dwight Williamson explained.
The magistrate was not expecting to see Hanky Williams again until his preliminary hearing on the drug charge and was surprised on Thursday evening to find Williams awaiting arraignment again on theft charges.
According to his most recent arrest report on Aug. 28, the victim reportedly told troopers her house was broken into and several items had been taken, including a video game player and over 200 Playstation games. Another individual told police Williams "loaded a DVD player and other items into her trunk."
The machine was later found in the trunk of the vehicle. "The victim identified the DVD player as being the same one stolen from her residence," the report states. "The victim further reported the value of the property stolen was approximately $3,000.00. The accused later confessed to stealing the aforementioned property in a written statement."
Dwight Williamson said he was irate to see Williams brought in before him to be arraigned twice in less than one week, which was why he threw the book at him with the heavy cash bond.
"I have known of him for many years, and as long as I have known him he has been in and out of trouble," Williamson said. "It would serve him right if they would charge him for being a persistent offender and keep him locked up."
Williamson was not joking about Hanky Williams arrest record either.
Between Williams most recent arrests, law enforcement officers and clerks at the courthouse had been making quips about having a betting pool about how long it would be until Williams was arrested again.
"I told them I don't give him two weeks," Court Marshall Bo Ryan said on Thursday.
"Bo was overly optimistic," another law enforcement officer said Friday.
A quick check of the Logan Banner files revealed another recent arrest. David Franklin Williams, 50, of Henlawson, was arrested by troopers D.W. Simmons and P.J. Dick of the West Virginia State Police for robbery on May 20. According to law enforcement reports on May 19 the officers received a complaint from the victim who stated that on May 19, "David Franklin Williams" along with another individual "did hold the victim against his will, as an unknown female did steal one $50 bill in US currency from his wallet."
After stealing the currency, the victim fled to the Omar Quick Stop, fearing the accused would inflict bodily injury to him, if he (had not) left the premises," the report states.
A warrant was issued for his arrest and he was taken into custody and booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at 1:05 a.m.
