The West Virginia State Police had their hands full recently when neighbors called concerning a shooting incident.

According to law enforcement reports, the officers responded to a 911 call about a male individual allegedly shooting a firearm at a female in the Lumber Camp area of Omar.

* Matthew Darrell Hairston, 49, of Omar, was arrested in Logan County by the WVSP for wanton endangerment and destruction of property on Sept. 4.

"Upon arrival to the scene, these officers made contact with the victim..." the report by troopers J.R. Brewer and D.W. Simmons states. "(The victim) stated that the defendant had fired a shotgun at her as she was leaving the residence of...(another individual) and that when the defendant was discharging the firearm at her he stated that he was going to kill her. These officers went to the residence and made contact with the defendant and placed him under arrest for wanton endangerment."

He was booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden at 5:29 p.m.

Officer J. Sheppard of the Logan County Sheriff's Department said the incident appeared to have started out as a domestic assault which escalated to a shooting and that he was on scene to assist the troopers.

Trooper J.R. Brewer said Hairston was not charged with a more serious crime due to the fact he missed the victim with a shotgun at 50 feet. Brewer said initially when officers arrived Hairston refused to surrender or comply with demands.
