HARTS, WV - Ina Dempsey, 83, of Harts, went home to be with the Lord Friday, November 1, 2008, at 2:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington. Her courageous battle with heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and kidney failure has come to an end. The lead singer of the Dempsey Sisters Quartet has joined her fellow sister Daisy Dempsey to sing with the angels in Heaven.
Born January 2, 1925, at Harts, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Elizabeth Lambert Adkins. She was the loving wife of Tilman Dempsey who has been awaiting her arrival in Heaven since Feb. 18, 2002. Also preceding her in death were seven brothers and sisters, Elija, Everett, Walter and Ward Adkins, Risby Brumfield, Manda Workman and Sylvia Browning, and nieces and nephews, Regina Joy Dempsey Clark, Joseph Donald Adkins, Everett Adkins, Billy Adkins, Everett Brumfield, Ester Tomblin, Janet Marie Adkins and Dorothy Clark. She was also the precious sister-in-law of the late Joe, Billy, Hearld, Herbert and Howard Dempsey, Hubert Cox, Lawrence Adkins, Scott Brumfield, Ossie Browning, Weltha Adkins, Frankie Adkins and Belle Adkins.
Those she leaves behind include her loving daughter, Loretta Gay (Ronald) Adkins; her "almost" daughter, Shelly (Paris) Nelson; grandchildren, Bryan Michael (Angela) Adkins, Jessica (Eddie Mullins) Lusher, Jason Nelson and Jacob Nelson; great-grandchildren she loved so dearly, Derrick Elkins, Erin Nicole Adkins and Bryan Michael Adkins II; sister, Dovie Cox of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; brother, Cecil Adkins of Florida; sisters-in-law, Flora Dempsey and Peggy (Rosco) Kirk, both of Harts, Lilly Mae (Willard) Church of Man and Juanita Adkins of Huntington; her nieces and nephews, Cecil Lee and Tommy Adkins, Jean, Mary Moore, Martha and Margie Adkins, Maggie Toppings, Genethal Adkins, Daisy (Jimmy) Scaggs, Carl (Sue) Adkins, Garland, Lloyd, and Bobby Donald Adkins, Odessa Workman, Vicie Jean (Gary) Henshaw, Patty Lane, Dorsey, Dallas, Charles Phillip, and Keith Adkins, Sharon and Kathy Bacon, Violet and Polly Richards, Billy and Johnny Brumfield, Carolyn Cook, Danny Adkins, Gregory and Michael Cox, Lana (Johnny) Napier, Johnny Joe (Christina) Napier, Tammy Stolling, Christy Hensley, Larry Hearld (Trish) Adams, Lou Ann (Nim) Adams, Bucky (Phyllis) Dempsey, Kent Dempsey, Autumn Elizabeth Dempsey, Sherry (Eugene) Browning and Brandy (Dustin) Smith.
Services will be held at noon Monday, November 3, at the Coal Branch Church of Jesus Christ where she had been a member for over 50 years at noon Monday, November 3, with her pastor, Jimmy Carter, and her loving friend and preacher, Rev. Smokey (Daisey) Hager officiating and Terry and Hearld Lucas providing the singing. Burial will follow at the Jason Dempsey Cemetery at Harts.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Freeman Funeral Home and Ina's special friend, Ilene Freeman, is in charge of arrangements.
