Logan, Mingo groups get money to fight drug abuse

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin awarded over $1.8 million in Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grants for 18 projects across the state.

According to the governors office these grants will help implement local prevention efforts or help to continue local prevention planning efforts associated with SPF-SIG programs.

Grants were awarded across the state and in our region:

The Logan County Board of Education will receive $120,313,

The STOP coalition in Gilbert will receive $148,057.

The Marshall University Research Corporation will receive $530,000.

United Way of the River Cities in Huntington will receive $79,047.

Step by Step in Charleston receive $95,722.

The SPF-SIG program is designed to enhance West Virginia's efforts to build a strategic frame work for state, regional and community prevention programs and partnerships to better coordinate alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention funding. These funds are meant to improve the overall quality of prevention program and the state's prevention workforce and to increase the availability of prevention services.

SPG-SIG program funds are awarded from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The agency in West Virginia which overseas federal funding for such programs is the West Virginia Prevention Resource Center.

The fiscal administrative agent for the funds is the WV Division of Criminal Justice Services.
