Area law enforcement officers made two more arrests on malicious assault charges recently.

William O'Brian Copley, age not listed, was arrested by Deputy Freddie Ferrell II of the Logan County Sheriff's Department for malicious wounding on Nov. 3.

According to police reports, on Oct. 31, Deputy Ferrell was dispatched to a residence in Holden in reference to an alleged sexual assault.

At 8:31, Ferrell arrived and spoke with a female who initially claimed she had been sexually assaulted at 5 p.m. Ferrell made arrangements for the woman to be taken to Charleston Area Medical Center to receive medical treatment and to have a sexual assault test kit conducted.

"After inquiring as to the alleged suspect, I was informed by (an individual) that the suspect (Copley) was at the defendant's residence," the report states. "(The individual) stated that the suspect/victim was badly injured. Myself and Deputy J.N. Sheppard then proceeded to Holden where we found the victim lying in a bed, unresponsive. The victim was laying on a blood covered pillow and was visibly bleeding from his mouth, nose and ears. I immediately radioed Logan EOC and requested an ambulance for the victim. The victim was transported by LEASA to Logan Regional Medical Center and later flown by Health Net to Cabell Huntington Hospital for treatment.

"After further investigation and interviews with witnesses, I discovered that the defendant had returned home from work and found his girlfriend and the victim, naked and in bed together. The defendant then retrieved a 10-gauge shotgun and struck the victim multiple times in the head and upper body with the barrel of the shotgun causing serious bodily injury."

A warrant was issued for Copley's arrest.

He was taken into custody and was arraigned in magistrate court and released on $35,000 bond. Confidential sources told The Logan Banner that the beating was extremely severe and it was not known if the victim would recover, which could lead to further charges.

Jacob Scott Bryant, 21, of Chapmanville, was arrested by Patrolman D.T. Bryant of the Chapmanville Police Department for malicious wounding on Nov. 1.

According to police reports, the officer received a call from 911 about a fight at Speedway.

"Upon my arrival, the defendant had already left the scene," the report states. "Upon speaking to (the victim) he stated that he didn't know the defendant but he knew his wife who was also at the scene. Upon speaking to the victim more, he stated that he was picking up trash in the parking lot when he noticed someone walking towards him.

"He then said when he looked up, he was hit multiple times in the face and believed he had something in his hand, such as brass knuckles. The victim suffered two lacerations, one under his left eye and one on his right cheek. EMS was called to transport (the victim) to Logan Regional Medical Center for treatment. The victim received 10 stitches while at the hospital. Upon further investigation it was determined that Jacob Bryant was the suspect."

A warrant was issued for his arrest and he was taken into custody and booked at the regional jail at 7:30 p.m.

According to The Logan Banner's files, the incidents were the eighth and ninth arrests for malicious wounding since Oct. 9.

Waylon Adams, 30, of Chapmanville, was arrested by deputies M.B. Carter and Dennis Brown of the Logan County Sheriff's Department for malicious wounding on Oct. 12.

Billy Lunsford, 40, of Switzer, was arrested by West Virginia State Police Trooper G.W. Collins for malicious wounding on Oct. 16.
