The LHS cheerleaders captured the triple-A Region 3 championship Saturday afternoon in Charleston by defeating defending champ Riverside.
Logan's cheerleaders now move on to the state competition set for December 13 at 2 p.m. in the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum.
"It was great," Logan Cheer Coach Michelle Akers said. "We beat Riverside by nine points. The girls are very excited and I think they're still in shock."
The regional champions and the runners-up advance to the state competition. Riverside, the runners-up, will also advance to the state meet.
Akers said the cheer competition was packed out with Logan fans.
"It was blue and gold everywhere," she said. "For the first time, Logan fans took up the middle section in the Civic Center. It was a great day."
Akers said the Logan cheerleaders performed a near-perfect routine.
"We didn't have any bobbles and it was a very clean routine," Akers said. "It was the hardest routine we've ever performed."
She said the LHS girls have worked hard all year to get ready for the competition.
"They really deserve this," Akers said. "They've worked so very hard.
"There were nine teams in our region and we won."
Akers said the state competition will be even tougher.
"It's a really tough field (of competition)," Akers said. "We're up against Brooke and they're up for their 11th straight state title."
In Class AA, Chapmanville finished second in its regional competition in Huntington and will advance to the state competition on Dec. 13 in Charleston.
Reportedly, Mingo County's Burch High School cheerleaders finished second and Matewan finished third in the Class A regional, also held in Huntington at the Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse. Man did not compete in the regional competition, a source said.
