OMAR, WV - Robert E. "John" Evans, 71, of Omar, departed this life Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at his residence.
Born November 15, 1936, at Gourd Branch in Wayne County, he was a son of the late Robert "Big Bob" and Dixie Finley Oney Evans. Also preceding him in death was his aunt who raised him, Aunt Halley.
Robert was a mining mechanic, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp, serving during the of years 1954-1956, and of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Kirkendoll Deskins Evans; four children, Kevin Evans of Orlando, Fla., Anita D. Evans of West Hamlin, Sharon E. Evans of Bloomingburg, Ohio, and Beverly M. Mollahan of Kermit; one brother, Samuel B. (Pricie) Evans of Dingess; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. John had a great regard for nephew, Mark A. Meeks, and a friend, Carroll "Hardy" Deskins, who passed away some years ago.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today, November 14, at the Collins Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Buck Deskins officiating. Entombment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby. Pallbearers will be family members and friends.
Visitation will begin two hours prior to services Friday at the funeral home.
Collins Funeral Home at Switzer is in charge of arrangements.
