Brent David Spencer, 29, of Chapmanville, was arrested by the West Virginia State Police around 6 a.m. for child neglect with injury on Dec. 11.
Spencer was booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden at 6:53 p.m.
Spencer reportedly called 911 about a head injury to a youngster, saying the child had been hurt falling down.
However, according to law enforcement officers when the child was transported to Logan Regional Medical Center the hospital staff discovered the injury was actually a gunshot wound.
Allegedly, the defendant initially claimed the shooting was an accident that happened while the defendant was watching television.
Bond was set at $250,000 cash only this morning by Logan County Magistrate Jeff Lane.
The shooting happened in the Caney Branch area sometime before 6 a.m. this morning, according to reports.
A spokesperson at the Logan detachment of the WVSP said troopers were still on the scene of the shooting at 10 a.m. A report to The Logan Banner said the victim was a 3-year-old female child.
The extent of the victim's injuries was not known at press time this morning. The type of gun used in the shooting was also not known.
