CHARLESTON - The Burch High School cheerleaders were excited to be cheering for the first time in the Class A state cheer competition on Saturday.

The BHS cheer squad didn't bring home the gold, but said they are proud to be the first team in Burch history to make it to the state cheerleading competition.

Burch finished fifth in the competition behind defending champion Wheeling Central, defending runner-up Clay-Battelle, Notre Dame and Buffalo.

BHS Coach Melissa Endicott said it was a big honor for her girls to make it to Charleston.

"I'm pleased. I'm proud of my girls," Endicott said. "They worked hard. As far as their effort, they've given 100 percent all year. It's just good to be here. We're happy. They are the first team to ever make it to the state championships. They have nothing to be ashamed of. I'm really proud of them. I couldn't ask anymore of them. They gave it their all."

Senior Rachel Simpkins said the Burch cheerleaders were a little nervous, but gave it all they had.

"We had the first-time jitters, but, at least we walked off the floor knowing we did the best we could do," Simpkins said.

Senior Beverly Hall said it was an exciting experience to cheer in the state competition.

"We did the best we could do and we were well prepared, but things happen," Hall said. "This is the first time I've ever (cheered) here and it's the last, but I'm leaving happy. We did everything we could. It was (great) to compete on the Civic Center floor and to feel the feeling you get from being in the state competition."

Senior Sharonaka Ferguson said she was pleased with the Burch cheerleaders' performance. She also offered some words of encouragement for next year's group.

"I enjoyed it," Ferguson said. "I thought we did really well for it to be our first time up here. It was more nerve-wracking than I imagined. I don't think words can describe how good it feels to be here. You don't know until you've been here and I just hope that the girls can make it back up here next year."

Senior Raquel Thacker said she was pleased with her team's performance.

"I think we did really well, and I'm glad we got to come," Thacker said. "Actually, we weren't that nervous for it being our first time. It felt really good to be here."

Returning to next year's Burch cheer team are juniors Kristen Hannah, Ariel Jarrell, Tierra Justice and Samantha Ratliff; sophomores Ciera Conley, Sienna Curry, Brandi Justice, Tonya Miller and Grace Perry; and freshmen Katie Collins and Chelsey Walters.

Logan and Chapmanville also competed in the state competition.

Logan took third in Class AAA and Chapmanville finished sixth in Class AA.
