CHARLESTON (AP) - A unanimous state Supreme Court has refused to review the loss of pension benefits for a former Logan County sheriff convicted in a recent vote-buying scandal.

Johnny ''Big John'' Mendez is at least the second public official caught in that federal election fraud probe to contest the subsequent loss of his pension.

State retirement officials stripped Mendez of his benefits for ''less than honorable service,'' following his 2004 guilty pleas to conspiracy charges.

A circuit judge later upheld that ruling, prompting Mendez to petition the Supreme Court.

In October, the justices affirmed the loss of benefits for former Lincoln County Assessor Jerry Weaver, who had also pleaded guilty in the vote buying conspiracy.

Both he and Mendez are Democrats.
