MAN - A local couple was found themselves under arrest again recently, just a few weeks after their last incarceration.

Paul David Cantrell, 20, of Kistler, was arrested by Man Police Department Patrolman J.H. Brown on a warrant for petit larceny and entering without breaking on Dec. 19. Cantrell was booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden at 11:20 p.m.

Benjamin Michael Ratliff, 18, of Man, was arrested by Sgt. D.A. Walls and Patrolman Brown for petit larceny and entering without breaking on Dec. 19. Ratliff was booked at the regional jail at 11:20 p.m.

According to police reports, on Dec. 6, Sgt. Walls received a call to the Dairy Delight on Main Street about a petit larceny that occurred on their property.

"The victim stated that she left her pocketbook inside of her vehicle and left it unlocked while parked at the Dairy Delight at the rear entrance," the report states. "During this time, the accused, as well as Benjamin Ratliff, made several passes in and around the Dairy Delight. According to witness statements, when the victim returned to her vehicle, she noticed that her pocketbook was missing from inside her vehicle. The pocketbook contained several credit cards and $525 in U.S. currency. Several attempts were made to contact the accused, as well as Mr. Ratliff, without success."

Officers received information that the pocketbook was allegedly inside Ratliff's residence.

"Another attempt was made to contact the accused as well as Ben without success. A quick search inside the apartment building by the creek bank directly behind the apartment recovered the pocketbook (from) the weeds. Everything was still inside the pocket book except the $525 in U.S. currency," the report stated.

The duo had originally been arrested by Sgt. Walls on Dec. 5 for being minors in possession of alcohol. Walls got a new warrant for their arrest the following day. They were booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden on Dec. 5 at 12:40 a.m. "They had been hiding," Sgt. Walls said Monday. "Officer Brown got them. They did this theft the day after they had been arrested on the underage consumption charges. They said they spent the money on weed, OxyContin and pain pills and then they wrote statements out against each other. This just proves there ain't no honor among thieves."

Walls said both of the suspects are no strangers to the court system.

"I told Paul one day he will steal from the wrong person and it will be the end of him when an angry homeowner catches him. People can get shot doing this stuff. Ben was arrested four days after his 18th birthday. He was one of the guys who broke into the Mayor's storage building," Walls said.

In other law enforcement news, a Danville man was arrested over allegedly stealing a hot dog.

Robert Shelton, 44, of Danville was arrested by Chapmanville Police Department Patrolman D.A. Browning for petit larceny and public intoxication on Dec. 19.

According to police reports, the officer was called to Speedway in Chapmanville "over an individual stealing food and eating it."

"The individual was back in (the) offices of the store walking around. When the manager told him to leave, he would not walk out front to the registers and sit down. (He) then came right back and did it again."

The individual allegedly also failed to tell the officer that he had been there since 2 a.m. that morning. He also allegedly told the officer that he had not stolen anything and that he had just gotten there. This officer was also informed by the cashiers in the store that the individual had drank several cups of coffee without paying for it and ate several donuts also in the store. The individual was also staggering and had slurred speech. "

Shelton was arrested and taken to jail, but was later released on bond.
