Murphy, a former Logan County car washer-turned crooner, whose album of American standards called "That's Life" has sold very well for Columbia Records, has been nominated for a NAACP Image Award.
Murphy has been nominated as Outstanding New Artist. He is joined in the category by Committed, Diggy Simmons, Mindless Behavior and Wynter Gordon.
The NAACP Image Awards will air on NBC February 17 at 8 p.m.
According to the show's website, www.naacpimageawards.net, "the NAACP Image Awards is the nation's premier event celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts (television, recording, literature, motion picture and writing & directing), as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors."
Murphy is an Omar native who has sold out several concerts in Charleston and Ashland, Ky. He will perform a live concert in Logan at the Coalfield Jamboree on February 3.
The concert has already sold out.
Upon its release, Murphy's album sold out throughout West Virginia at several major stores such as Best Buy and Walmart.
