West Chapmanville students created their own wax museum in Chapmanville Town Hall by researching and portraying — in costume — several historical leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, Babe Ruth, Princess Diana, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Thomas Jefferson, the Rocket Boys, Betsy Ross and many others during the educational exercise, which allowed other students at the school to walk by and ask them about their importance.
West Chapmanville Principal Doug Barrett said the wax museum was a way to get kids to have fun while learning history.
“The kids learn public speaking and good research skills,” Barrett said. “They make history come alive. The students who ask them about who they are portraying also learn about history and it’s an activity that’s fun for all the kids.”
The students collected loose change from the students coming by to hear about their significance and that money will be collected and donated to a charity of the students’ choice, Assistant Principal Bonnie Vance said.
“I think this is a wonderful learning experience for the children,” Vance said. “It gives them hands-on learning and they do research and then present that research to students and that helps their public speaking. It’s a good experience and they are all excited about learning.”
Caiden Erlewine, who portrayed John Wilkes Booth, said he learned a lot from researching President Lincoln’s killer.
“I didn’t know how he died, that he was hung in a barn,” Erlewine said. “It was awesome to learn about that.”
Jordan Preece portrayed Princess Diana and said she wanted to know more about her life as a princess.
“She was really nice and a princess and I like princesses,” Preece said. “She was just a great person. This is really fun because I like telling the other kids what I’ve learned about Princess Diana.”
Erin Sargent, a teacher at the school, said the wax museum helps the students learn about the historical people.
“They are all having a lot of fun and learning,” Sargent said.
