County Fire Coordinator Harold Ward said this is a first for Logan County — or any county south of Charleston and it is a major event coming to the coalfields. The convention will be held at the Chief Logan Conference Center in Chief Logan State Park on August 13-15.
“The State Fireman’s Association is an association of firefighters from all over West Virginia that works for the betterment of fire departments in the state,” Ward said. “They help get legislation passed for the safety and funding of firefighters and all the fire departments in West Virginia. They’re holding their convention this year in August in Logan County. This is the first time it’s ever been in the southern part of the state below Charleston.
“They decided to let the Logan County Firefighters Association and all the fire departments in the county are hosting it and there will be approximately 300 firefighters and their families from all over West Virginia.”
Ward said Lincoln and Boone County firefighters associations are co-hosting the event.
Ward said there will be a golf scramble set for August 13 and on August 14-15, the firefighters will be conducting business, but will also be treated to a cookout and Pickin’ in the Park and a ride on the Hatfield-McCoy Trail.
“We want to entertain them and we’re going to provide a safe environment for them to enjoy themselves,” Ward said.
Ward said the firefighters association plans to ask Tri-River Transit to provide buses to transport firemen safely to and from their destinations, whether it be to the Fountain Place Mall or to a bar.
“Tri-State would be the designated drivers for them,” Ward said.
Bringing the convention to the Chief Logan Convention Center is a big job, Ward said.
“We want to make sure they realize that we have good firefighters in Logan County and the southern part of West Virginia and we do contribute to the well-being of the rest of the state,” Ward said. “It’s going to be a big thing and we’re going to enjoy it.”
