The Logan-based West Virginia Dream 16-and-under AAU girls’ basketball team captured the championship of its own eighth-annual Logan Madness Basketball Tournament last weekend by going 5-0.

The Dream beat Mingo Central twice, Parkersburg South and also Westside twice.

In the championship game the Dream beat Westside 55-53 in a very close, well-played game by both teams.

The Dream defeated Westside twice during the event, also taking a thrilling one-point victory in overtime last Thursday night, 56-55, with a foul shot with 0.1 of a second on the clock from Hannah Tothe.

Tothe torched the nets for 15 points in the first half during the finals and ended the game with 20 points.

Kristin DesRocher added 14 points and incoming freshman Monica Mitchell added 9 points to go along with 14 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

“Monica was a huge factor in the securing this win for us,” Dream coach Mike Tothe said. “She controlled the boards late in the game and gave us a couple of big baskets. She came up big defensively in the last minute and blocked a shot near the foul line with the score tied and she went 5-for-6 from the foul line. Both Westside games during this tourney were one possession games throughout most of the second half. Westside is a team as good as it gets. They are quick, they shoot well and they have a good post presence and present a lot of matchup problem.”

The Dream are currently 14-2 in the AAU season and have won two tourney championships.

Last week, the team attended a one-day shootout at River View High School and thrashed Hurley, Va., 85-40, and Ravenswood 65-37.

Kyra Cline scored 20 points in each of those games.

DesRocher, a standout player at Chapmanville Regional High School, scored 18 and 9 points, while Logan High School’s Tothe scored 15 and 26 points.

Mitchell added 8 and 11 points and Kelsey Kirk tossed in 6 and 5 points.

Chrissy Farmer chipped in 4 points and 5 points.

Members of the team include: Tothe; Cline; DesRocher; Mitchell; Logan High School twins Kelsey and Katie Kirk; Hannah Adkins; and Chrissy Farmer.

The team is scheduled to travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, this coming weekend for another tournament.

The Dream would like to thank the following sponsors who made the Logan Madness Tourney a huge success and those people were: Kellie Wooten-Willis of Nationwide Insurance; Trinity Healthcare; Williamson Gun; Greg “Hootie” Smith; Hill Chiropractic; Mark Hobbs Law Office; Alpha Natural Resources Brooks Run West; Radio Shack at Fountain Place; Merritt Insurance; Harold Davis CPA; and First Place Screen Printing.
