CHARLESTON, W.Va. — John Robert Damron, 30, of Charleston, passed away April 29, 2012.
Born January 6, 1982, in Charleston, he was a son of the late Robert A. and Carole Legg Damron. Also preceding him in death were his grandparents: maternal, Morton and Charlotte Martyn Legg, and paternal, Oval and Roberta Damron; aunt and uncle, Kathy Damron Riffe and Billy “Bullit” Riffe, and uncles, Mark and John Legg.
John attended J.E. Robbins Elementary; Stonewall Jackson Junior High, where he played basketball; and Capitol High School, where he starred in baseball. He received a scholarship to play baseball for Oberlin College, and from there he graduated with a degree in environmental science.
John was a gifted athlete, mostly in baseball, from a young age, playing in North Charleston and Midwestern, now Capitol-Midwestern, for Hardee’s. He currently played in the baseball league on the Orioles, in the men’s league, and on the softball league for the Elk Funeral Home Lolligaggers, in the mixed league, at the King Center. He was a mine inspector with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.
Survivors include his loving family:, uncle, Bill (Sue) Damron of London, Ky.; aunt, Sue (David) Johnson of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; aunts, Lana Kingerly and Jackie Johnson; cousins, Amy Damron (Mark) Abbott, Cam Johnson, Bret (Jessica) Johnson, Will (Jill) Damron, Lindsey Damron, Shelly Legg, Ally and Luke Abbott, Jimmy Spurlock, Haley Spurlock and Laura Legg.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Elk Funeral Home, 2001 Pennsylvania Ave., Charleston with Pastor Butch Cantrell officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Peck’s Mill with his parents.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
