DALE WILEY JR.

RICHMOND, Va. — Dale O. Wiley Jr., 88, of Richmond, Va., passed away Saturday, May 5, 2012.

A native of Logan, he is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pauline St. George Wiley; a daughter, Mary Ann Wiley Setien, and her husband, Jeffrey Allan Setien; two grandchildren, Eileen Avis Setien and Jeffrey Scott Setien, and his daughter-in-law, Joanne Tigue Wiley, all of Richmond.

Mr. Wiley was preceded in death by his son, Dr. Dale O. Wiley III, a Richmond dentist; and his parents, Dale O. Sr. and Dale Avis Wiley.

Mr. Wiley was educated in Logan County schools. He graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1949, and from Harvard University, with a Master of Science degree in 1950. He worked for Reynolds Metals Company for 34 years and became manager of the Foil Division. Long active in public affairs, Mr. Wiley was on the board of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College for 16 years, and was chairman for five years. He was president of the Central Richmond Association for five years, and was chairman of its Flood Protection Committee for 20 years and was a strong advocate of the Richmond Flood Wall Project. He served in the U.S. Army 9th Infantry Division in World War II. He was in combat for 73 days in the Battle of the Huertgen Forest in Germany between September 15, 1944 and November 25, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star and the Belgian Fourranger. He appeared on the Oliver North television program, “War Stories” regarding his part in the Huertgen Forest Battles. Mr. Wiley’s interest in the history of Richmond resulted in his “Early Richmond” slide presentation about Richmond’s history, given to numerous clubs and organizations in the city.

In retirement, Mr. Wiley was the manager of his family’s properties in West Virginia. He also served as an expert witness to two law firms in Charleston, W.Va.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bliley’s-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave.

Funeral services will be private.
