County baseball teams still ranked in top 10

As the sectional baseball tournaments get under way this week Logan County’s three baseball teams find themselves in a familiar position.

The top 10.

All three teams are in the top 10 in their respective classes as the sectional tourney’s are set to be played this week.

Logan (20-5) is ranked No. 8 in Class AAA, while Chapmanville Regional (17-10) is sixth in Class AA and Man (17-11) is eighth in Single-A.

Logan began sectional play on Monday night with a 6-2 win at George Washington.

Hurricane (26-4) remains on top of the 3A poll this week. Fairmont Senior (23-6) is second, Jefferson (24-7) third, Bridgeport (23-7) fourth, Musselman (22-9) fifth, St. Albans (24-5) sixth, Parkersburg South (21-9) seventh, Logan eighth, Princeton (20-8) ninth and Nitro (20-9) 10th.

In the Class AA poll, Point Pleasant moved up from fourth to first. The Black Knights, in their final year in the Double-A Cardinal Conference, have a 20-6 record.

Last year’s Class AA state runner-up to Chapmanville, the Wyoming East Warriors, are ranked No. 2 with a 21-4 mark.

Ritchie County (22-3) is third, Petersburg (21-8) fourth and Herbert Hoover (20-8) of the Cardinal Conference is fifth. Chapmanville is sixth, Oak Hill (19-9) seventh and Poca (18-12), another Cardinal team, is No. 8. Berkeley Springs (14-13) is ninth and Bluefield (14-9) and Wayne (16-12), yet another Cardinal team, are tied for 10th in the state.

In Class A, East Hardy (25-5) overtook last week’s No. 1 team, Charleston Catholic, for the top spot in the state. The Irish are second with a 24-6 mark. Bishop Donahue (20-4) is third, Moorefield (17-9) fourth, Valley Fayette (21-7) fifth, Weirton Madonna (16-9) sixth, Williamstown (20-6) seventh, Man eighth, Gilmer County (21-8) ninth and Buffalo (16-14) 10th.
