Logan High School will have their graduation ceremony for more than 150 seniors beginning at 7 p.m. today at the school. Among those honored will be nine Valedictorians, one Salutatorian and one Honorarian.
For persons wishing to attend the ceremony, there will be shuttle buses making stops at the parking building in downtown Logan and in front of Peebles Department Store. The buses will begin running at 5 p.m. and will run after the ceremony.
Valedictorian
Morgan Shae Aguirre is the daughter of Kirk and Angela Aguirre of Logan. Morgan is a member of the Lady Wildcats softball team, Teens against Alcohol and Drugs, Student Council, Key Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Math Field Day, the Varsity Cheerleading squad, and is a member of the National Honor Society, of which she serves as Vice President, Morgan also, represented Logan High School in the American Legion Girls State. Her favorite subjects are calculus and art. She has participated in WE CAN, Christmas in the Park, American Red Cross Blood Drive volunteer, Eagles Nest, and served as a volunteer elf for the Logan County Mine Service Christmas Extravaganza. Morgan is the female recipient of the Logan High School Wendy’s High School Heisman. Morgan plans to attend the University of Charleston as a Welch Colleague and a Pre-Medical Biology major. After she completes her undergraduate degree, she plans to attend medical school to become a plastic surgeon.
Tyler Scott Barrett is the son of Ronald and Elaine Barrett of Henlawson. Tyler is a member of the Pep Club, Prayer Club, Teens against Alcohol and Drugs, Math Field Day, National Honor Society, French Club, and represented Logan High School at the American Legion Boys State conference. Tyler’s favorite subjects are Calculus, and English 101/102. He has participated in Relay for Life, Christmas in the Park, Forest Lawn Candle and Lighting Service, Eagles Nest. Tyler has been recognized as a Berea College Pinnacle Scholar of Excellence in Math, and was chosen as the Logan County winner of the WV State Journal Student of Excellence. Tyler plans to attend Southern WV Community and Technical College for one year and then transfer to WVU to become an electrical engineer.
Rebecca Yvonne Canterbury is the daughter of Adrian and Lee Ann Canterbury of Logan. Rebecca is a member of the Wildcats Tennis team, National Honor Society, Key Club, Yearbook Staff, Prom Committee, Homecoming Float Committee, Marshall University SCORE’s participant, and was the recipient of the AP English Language award. Her favorite subjects are Anatomy and English. Rebecca is an active member of the Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, where she serves as a lector and altar girl. She is also a counselor at the Coalfield Writers Children’s Camp. Rebecca plans to attend Davis and Elkins College, where she has signed to play Tennis, and to earn a degree in Nursing. Rebecca plans to become a nurse anesthetist.
Matthew Austin Greene is the son of Jerry and Vicki Green of Logan. Matthew is a member of the 2010 AAA Boys State Basketball championship team, senior co-captain of the Wildcats Basketball team, National Honor Society, Wildcat Baseball team, Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Prayer Club, Spanish Club, Float Committee and Prom Committee. Matthew was named All-State in Baseball in 2011. He has served as Vice President of Teens against Alcohol and Drugs, and Secretary of the National Honor Society. Matthew’s favorite subjects are Chemistry, Western Civilization, and Health Care Fundamentals. Matthew has volunteered with Christmas in the Park, and Prayer Club food drives. Matthew has committed to play baseball at WVU where he will be attending to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Biology and then continue to Optometry school.
Makayla Brooke Gresham is the daughter of David and Marsha Gresham of Chapmanville. Makayla is a member of the Varsity Cheerleading squad, National Honor Society, Key Club, Teens against Alcohol and Drugs, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Prayer Club, Math Field Day, Student Council, Pep Club, and a member of the Homecoming Float Committee. Makayla also serves as Senior Class Treasurer. Her favorite subjects are English and History. Makayla serves as a volunteer at the Trinity Healthcare Center; Christmas in the Park, LHS Mini Cheer Camp, Makayla serves as a music instructor at Corner Family Fellowship’s Vacation Bible School, and Relay for Life and the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Marathon. Makayla plans to attend WVU to study biology with a business minor and then pursue dental school to specialize as a Prosthodontist.
Tyler Hunter Howerton is the son of John and Carol Howerton of Logan. Tyler is a member of Math Field Day, Academic Challenge, Key Club, and Prayer Club. Tyler is also a member of the varsity Tennis team. His favorite subject is math. Tyler has served as a counselor for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Camp and a counselor at the summer Tennis camp. Tyler plans to attend WVU to study engineering.
Adam Tennyson Mareske is the son of Mark and Leigh Mareske of West Logan. Adam is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Council, and has played varsity baseball all 4 years. Adam is currently as Treasurer of the National Honor Society, Prayer Club, Treasurer of Teens against Alcohol and Drugs. Adam has served as 11th grade Sergeant at Arms, and 9th grade treasurer. He is also a four year member of the Wildcats baseball team, and has served as a Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp counselor, “WE CARE” Outreach program, American Red Cross volunteer, Salvation Army volunteer, Floor Relief worker, and community food drive volunteer. Adam plans to attend Southern WV Community and Technical College and then transfer to a school of pharmacy to earn a pharmacy degree.
Alex Charles Mareske is the son of Mark and Leigh Mareske of West Logan. Alex is a member of the National Honor Society, Teens against Alcohol and Drugs, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a 4 year member of the varsity baseball team. Alex has served as Vice President of his class all 4 years of high school; He is male recipient of the Logan High School Wendy’s High School Heisman. He was named “Mr. Wildcat” at Homecoming this year and serves as an American Red Cross volunteer, Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp Counselor, Salvation Army volunteer, flood relief volunteer, and the WE CARE outreach program. Alex plans to attend Southern WV Community and Technical College and transfer to a four year college to study engineering.
Jessica Nicole Morrison is the daughter of Jim and Tiffany Morrison of Chauncey. Jessica is a member of the National Honor Society, Academic Challenge and Math Field day. Jessica has served as President of the Key Club, and has volunteered for UNICEF, Friends of the NRA Banquet, Salvation Army, Vacation Bible School, and the Autism Awareness Walk. Her favorite subjects are Chemistry and English. Jessica has been recognized as a Berea Pinnacle Scholar in Community Service, she is a Discus award winner, and competes in equestrian competitions. Jessica will attend Concord University as a Bonner Scholar, to earn her degree in Pre-Veterinary Medicine and attend graduate school to become an Equine Veterinarian.
Salutatorian
Jenna Lynn Turner is the daughter of John and Judy Turner of Chapmanville. Jenna is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Teens against Alcohol and Drugs, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Prom Promise Committee, a 4 year member of the Wildcat Tennis team, Eagles Nest and Student Council. Jenna has served as the HOBY Ambassador, Prayer Club President, Key Club Secretary, and National Honor Society Sargent at Arms, was Homecoming Queen, Class Attendance Officer, and was selected as a Berea College Pinnacle Scholar of Excellence in Community Service. Her favorite subjects are English and Health. Jenna has volunteered with the Victory over Hunger campaign, Feeding America, Christmas Outreach Project, Christmas in the Park, Creative Writing camps, Buggy Day, American Red Cross Blood Drives, canned food drives and Relay for Life and attends the First Baptist Church of McConnell. Jenna plans to attend Marshall University as a Presidential Scholar to major in speech pathology.
Honorarian
Zachary Scott Anderson is the son of Bill and Rebecca Anderson of Logan. Zachary is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Teens against Alcohol and Drugs and Prayer Club. Zach has served as class Chaplin all four years; he is currently President of the National Honor Society, and President of Teens against Alcohol and Drugs. Zach’s favorite subjects are English and History. Zach serves as a media tech at the Word of Life Church; he ministers to several area churches. Zach plans to attend Southern WV Community and Technical College his first year, then transfer to Marshall University to pursue a degree in Education, he plans to become a teacher and then enter the ministry full time.
