Bea Orr, considered the godmother of girls’ softball in Logan County, will be honored on June 6 during the Marshall University Coaches Caravan event at the Logan Country Club.

Orr, who began Logan County girls’ youth softball in the 1970s, has been a daughter of Marshall University throughout her life and has taken an active role as an ambassador for Marshall.

The Marshall event will also be a golf outing at the LCC beginning with registration around 10 a.m. and the luncheon to get under way at 11:30 a.m. Marshall football coach Doc Holliday, basketball coach Tom Herrion and other coaches and staff are scheduled to be present, including athletics director Mike Hamrick.

Orr served as a board member on both the Logan Chapter of the Marshall Alumni Association and the Marshall University Alumni Association based on campus. Orr served a two-year term as President of the Alumni Association and a four-year term of the Institutional Board of Advisors.

During her 59-year career as a teacher/administrator in Logan County Schools, she has been committed to the establishment of quality programs with health and physical education in all of the county schools.

Additionally, Orr has promoted and directed countywide girls’ sports programs even before Title IX became law in 1972. She also introduced and developed countywide Miss Softball America programs and has implemented the Jump Rope for Heart program in all county elementary schools.

Orr also stressed the importance of learning lifetime sports such as tennis, golf, archery and last year, added swimming lessons as part of every fourth grade student’s physical education curriculum.

Orr has recruited countless educators to begin their teaching careers in the county school system. She has also provided assistance to many local students about programs and opportunities available to them by attending Marshall University.

In past years, she organized local activities for alumni to attend Marshall sporting events as a group.

I had Bea for a seventh grade teacher. She was great. Swung a mean paddle, but still loved her.

My physical education teacher in high school was a Mrs. Orr. She was a great teacher and I have always remembered her. So kind to each of the girls and never humiliating to any of them. I was wondering if this is her. I do remember that her name was Bea Orr.
