The Winter Bible Contest 2012 was held for the first 10 Wednesday evenings for the youth of the First Baptist Church of McConnell. The theme of the event was “Boldness to Stand”.
A Bible study of the lives of Old and New Testament men that were not ashamed to be persecuted or killed for their belief in God was the subject each midweek. Elijah, Nehemiah, Daniel, Shadrack, Meshak, Abendigo, John the Baptist, Peter, John, and Jesus were the characters that the young people leaned about.
The WBC featured a variety of ways for the four teams to receive points in the competition. Each team attempted to score points by reciting memory Bible verses from a list of thirty on the subject of boldness. They could memorized the pledge to the American flag, Christian flag, and the Bible, quote the 10 divisions of the Old and New Testament, unscramble the Bible word quiz, and be the fastest to fine a key verse in the Bible drill game. Bringing friends to be part of their team was another form of attaining points.
At the end of the ten week period, the team that was ahead was crowned “champs” and that word was printed on the back of their Winter Bible Contest tee-shirt. The total of all four team’s points added up to the goal of 12,000 points and a pizza party was rewarded to the entire youth group.
This year’s teen captains and co-captains were: Dustin Doss, Jackie Blankenship, Jacob Vance, Casey Vance, Kristiana Drummer, Kiana Minter, Will Turner, and Jenna Turner. The winning team was Will’s Wonders. Special awards were given to Jackie and Ryan Blankenship for saying all the memory work. The following were given prizes for achievement in the contest: first place, Stephanie Cooper, second place, Ryan Blankenship, third place, Jackie Blankenship, fourth place, Shannon Cooper, fifth place, Dustin Doss, and sixth place, Hunter Napier.
The First Baptist Church of McConnell has had a Winter Bible Contest for 30 years.
“It is a tradition that encourages learning and memorizing the Bible in a fun way,” said Pastor John E. Godby. “The youth group has a year round program each Wednesday. Many activities are done to keep the youth involved in the life of the church.”
