WEST LOGAN—Moss Burgess served at his last meeting as a member of the Logan County Board of Education Tuesday. The board members expressed their appreciation for his service and offered comments, with each saying he may be leaving his post, but his being actively involved in doing things for the children of Logan County is far from over.
BOE President Phyllis Adkins commented on teaching him as a child.
“He has been a good board member and has worked hard with the schools and teachers for the children,” said Adkins.
“You always knew where he stood,” said BOE member Mark McGrew.
“We have five diverse people on this board and often had five different opinions,” said Dr. Pat White. “That is a good thing and makes you think things through more carefully.”
School Superintendent Wilma Zigmond talked about her long history with Burgess.
“We have had a strong educational background together. This is not a “rubber stamp” board and that means you have to think, that’s one thing he always was always good at, making us think,” said Zigmond. “He always has the children in mind and wants to make a positive difference in their lives.”
“He always said we are challenged to make the children career or college ready,” said BOE attorney Leslie Tyree.
Burgess expressed his appreciation to the board members.
“I am a vocal person and I don’t hide anything. I am thankful for the money we have had to do things for the children,” said Burgess. “Coal made it all possible and is so important. I have been considered a radical, but I wouldn’t take any of my votes back — except maybe two concerning salary. I thank you all.”
As the meeting came to a close, Burgess addressed incoming board member Jim Frye.
“Jim, I wish you the best of luck,” said Burgess. “Now your phone can start ringing.”
The next meeting will be an organizational meeting on Monday, July 2, at 5 p.m. at the Logan County Schools office when Frye will be sworn in and officers for the BOE will be elected.
