MUD FORK — The Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College Board of Governors has announced its 2012-2013 slate of officers that was elected unanimously on June 19 during its regular Board meeting.

Thomas A. Heywood, Attorney, Bowles Rice McDavid Graff and Love of Charleston, was elected as Board Chair; Wilma J. Zigmond, Superintendent of Logan County Schools, was elected as Vice Chair, and Logan businessman Glenn T. Yost was elected as Secretary.

Southern President Joanne Yeager Tomblin thanked outgoing Chairman Terry Sammons for his outstanding leadership of the Board over the past two years, and for generously giving of his time and talent in support of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. Sammons’ term as Board Chair was concluded, but he continues to serve as a member of the Board. Tomblin read a proposed resolution honoring Sammons for his service and dedication to the College and Board of Governors. The resolution was unanimously approved by the Board and will become a part of the official meeting minutes.

Sammons thanked Tomblin and the Board for their support, and noted the strength of the College’s leadership and forecast a bright future for Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.

The 12-member Board of Governors is the governing body of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. Of the 12 members, nine are citizen members appointed by the Governor, and three are institutional members elected by the constituent group they represent ─ faculty, classified staff and student body. Members of the Board of Governors work cooperatively with the college president and administration to establish institutional governance and strategic planning.

In addition to Heywood, Zigmond and Yost, citizen members appointed by the Governor include Linda Q. Akers, Kevin Fowler, Shelly Huffman, Jada Hunter, George Kostas and Terry Sammons. Southern’s institutional members include George Morrison (faculty representative), Debbie Dingess (classified staff representative), and Eileen Aranas (student representative).

“We have an outstanding Board that truly understands the mission of community colleges and our focus on providing blended educational opportunities and training for students of all ages,” said Tomblin.
