HAMLIN (AP) — A Lincoln County commissioner charged in an election fraud investigation has resigned.

Media outlets report that Thomas Ramey Jr. submitted a letter of resignation Monday. The other commissioners plan to meet Tuesday to accept Ramey’s resignation.

An Aug. 8 plea hearing is set for Ramey in U.S. District Court in Charleston.

Prosecutors allege Ramey lied to an FBI agent about absentee ballot applications. The case stems from a conspiracy to sway Lincoln County’s 2010 Democratic primary with fraudulent absentee ballots.

Two other officials charged in the investigation face sentencing Aug. 29.

Then-Sheriff Jerry Bowman pleaded guilty to a role in the conspiracy. Then-County Clerk Donald Whitten pleaded guilty to lying to an investigator. Both men resigned as a result of the charges.
