It was the end of the line for the Chapmanville 11-12-year-old Little League All-Star baseball team, which was drilled 18-0 by Shinnston in Wednesday night’s state tournament semifinals at Martinsburg.

The game was stopped after four innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Chapmanville closed out 3-2 in the state tourney and 5-3 in the all-star season. Chapmanville, the District 2 runner-ups, had advanced to the semifinals after knocking off Beckley, 7-6, in seven innings in one of Tuesday night’s quarterfinals.

Shinnston (5-0, 9-1) advanced to play in Thursday’s 11 a.m. state championship game against Barboursville, which blanked Bridgeport 5-0 in Wednesday’s other semifinal. The winner moves on to play in the Southeast Regional tourney in Georgia.

Shinnston clubbed six home runs in the game — four off Chapmanville starting pitcher Josh Zigmond — and plated five runs in each of the first three innings. Shinnston hit three straight homers in the second inning — a two-run shot by David Akers and solo homers by Dustin Marks and Spencer McDugal.

Nathaniel Thompson then laced a two-run homer in the third to make it 15-0.

In the fourth inning, Noah Strater went yard for another home run as Shinnston led 16-0. Two batters later, it was Colby Carpenter’s turn as he hit a solo shot to make it 17-0.

Shinnston pounded out 17 hits in the win.

Akers was 3-for-4 for the game with five RBI. Carpenter was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Marks went 4-for-4 with three runs knocked in. McDugal was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Thompson was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Zigmond pitched three innings, allowing 15 runs and 11 hits with two walks, a hit batter and five strikeouts. He was relieved by Devin Hensley in the fourth inning.

Akers was the starting and winning pitcher for Shinnston. He went all four innings and allowed just one hit — a first-inning bunt single by Conner Mullins. Akers walked one and struck out five.
