CHARLESTON (AP) — Anti-coal activists say they walked onto a West Virginia strip mine and shut it down.
The Radical Action for Mountain Peoples’ Survival said in a news release Saturday that more than 50 protesters shut down Patriot Coal’s Hobet mine in Boone County. The group says at least three protesters were arrested at the site, and two others were arrested earlier at Kanawha State Forest.
State Police Lt. R.W. Lively confirmed that some arrests were made, but he could not say how many or provide other details.
Patriot Coal officials did not immediately respond to telephone and email messages.
RAMPS previously said its “Mountain Mobilization” event was intended to draw attention to mining tactics that are endangering the health and safety of West Virginians and others in the Appalachian region.
