MAN — A Man-area school bus driver has been suspended after a kindergarten student was left on the bus after it was parked at the bus garage.

The bus driver, who was not named by the Logan County Board of Education, was suspended for 30 days for leaving the young child on the bus at the Man bus garage. The incident occurred nearly two weeks ago.

According to reports, the bus driver parked the bus after making his run from Buffalo Creek Grade School. The bus driver found the child asleep on the bus after the parents called to say their child did not come home from school.

The report said Logan County Schools Assistant Superintendent Jim Guy was scheduled to meet with bus drivers at each garage this morning to go over procedures to make sure no child is left behind on the school buses.

According to reports, some school buses driven by the Logan County Schools system are equipped with child reminder alarms which sound after the buses are parked.

The alarm reportedly goes off until the driver walks from the front of the bus to the back to turn it off, which allows the driver to check for any children that might have gotten left behind.

The bus was equipped with the child reminder alarm, but, when the driver went back to turn it off, he still missed the sleeping child, Guy said.

“We had an elementary student left on a bus at the Man bus garage and we were notified about it and an investigation was done and the bus driver was suspended for 30 days,” Guy said. “As soon as we were notified about it, the board took quick action.

“The bus driver just missed the child. He went back to turn his buzzer off and he didn’t check the bus thoroughly. I’m meeting with all the bus drivers today to talk to them about various issues and to tell them not to get complacent and not check. The bus driver admitted he missed the child. We’re following up and double checking everything.

“One of the other drivers found the child on the bus and the child wasn’t in any danger. There was somebody at the garage. The parents came and got the child.”
