CHARLESTON (AP) — A worker at a Raleigh County coal mine has died following an accident.

Department of Commerce spokeswoman Leslie Fitzwater says the accident occurred Tuesday at the Beckley Pocahontas Mine near Eccles.

Fitzwater identified the victim as 43-year-old Gregory A. Byers of Beckley. He was pinned by mining equipment and suffered crushing injuries.

Byers is the fourth West Virginia coal mining death so far this year.

It marked the second fatality at the mine in two years. A 28-year-old miner was killed in April 2010 when he was standing too close to a piece of heavy equipment and was crushed against a wall. Federal investigators cited Scott Depot-based International Coal Group for violating a roof control plan.

The mine is now owned by Arch Coal, which bought ICG last year.
