CHAPMANVILLE — Christmas came early for a Logan County resident during Thornhill Ford Lincoln’s Christmas in July sales event. The automotive company hosted an automobile give-a-way by asking surrounding residents to write a letter to Santa, explaining why they should win the car in question, a 2000 Lincoln Town Car. Dealership officials decorated a Christmas box in the showroom for contestants to deposit letters.

“We put together a committee of citizens to read all the letters and choose the person they thought needed the car most,” said Butch Nisbet, Store manager. “The committee narrowed contestants down to 10 people, and choose one as the winner.”

With Santa by his side, Nisbet read the chosen letter to the crowd, revealing Jeremy Podunavac as the car’s winner. Brenda York, a friend of Jeremy’s, submitted the letter on his behalf and watched with tears in her eyes when she recognized Nisbet was reading her letter.

In her letter, York said Podunavac was a “single parent who works very hard every day at a low income job, and he is a wonderful father to a child with disabilities.”

“This car,” she continued in her letter, “would make a huge impact in the lives of Jeremy and his son, as he uses his income tax checks every year to keep his vehicle running in order to take his son to his many out of town and out of state doctor or hospital visits.”

The nine finalists received gift cards from a local grocery store, courteous of the dealership.

“Christmas in July was a tremendous success,” Nisbet said. “We love being able to help those in tremendous need — that’s something we’ve built our business on, and that’s something we will continue to do.”
