By the time the weekend rolls around the Logan High School football team will have gone through two weeks of practices for the upcoming season.

Coupled with the June three-week summer practice period that’s a lot of practice times.

Now it’s time to hit someone else for a change instead of your teammate who is lined up across from you.

The Wildcats will get a chance to do just that this Saturday night when Logan is scheduled to have its first preseason test as LHS heads to Tug Valley to take on the Panthers in a 7 p.m. contest at the Tug Valley High School football field in Naugatuck.

It’s the first of two scrimmages for the Wildcats, which then head to Falling Rock on Friday, Aug. 17 to take on the host Huskies and Warren Local (Ohio) beginning at 6 p.m. Logan will first take on the Ohio team at 6 and then will scrimmage Hoover at 7:30.

Logan should be well tested in the pair of scrimmages ahead of its regular season opener on Aug. 24 at home against Class A county rival Man. The Wildcats are hoping to build on last year’s success when Logan was 8-3 and advanced to the Class AAA playoffs.

Last year, Tug Valley was 6-4 but missed making the Class AA playoffs due to a relatively weak schedule. The Panthers went 8-3 in 2010 and reached the post-season but were humbled, 62-0, at Magnolia in the first round of the playoffs. Tug Valley, led by quarterback Mikey Newsome, drop back to Single-A status this fall.

Herbert Hoover stumbled to a 2-8 record last season, falling 33-3 to Mingo Central in the regular season finale, but hope to be much better this season.

Warren Local, located in Vincent, Ohio, finished 5-5 last season.

“Hoover thinks they are going to be really good,” Logan coach Gary Mullins said. “These scrimmages are good for the linemen because it makes you see that they are getting what you are teaching them. Because when you are at practice their buddy across from them might be helping them and you wouldn’t know but when you get them out on the field there’s no helping them and there’s no hiding.”

Logan has lots of personnel returning from last year’s team but will have a brand new backfield as last year’s duo of David Toney and Joe Street have been lost to graduation. The two combined for 2,000 yards on the ground last season.
