MATEWAN (AP) — Two celebrations of Matewan’s history are merging into one festival.

The Matewan Massacre reenactment and the Hatfield McCoy Festival will be combined into one event, Matewan Heritage Day. The new festival will be held May 23.

The reenactment also is getting a new name. The annual production now will be called the Matewan Massacre Drama.

The play is based on the 1920 gunfight in Matewan between coal miners trying to unionize and Baldwin-Felts agents hired by coal operators to provide security for mines and evict miners living on company property. Twelve men were killed.

The Hatfield McCoy Festival is an annual reunion of members of the two families whose conflict drew international attention.
