PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Gasoline prices fell yesterday to $1.79 for a gallon of regular unleaded in Pikeville, Ky., and dropped to $1.99 in some parts of Logan County. But, not all gas stations dropped their prices.
In Chapmanville and downtown Logan this morning, gas was still priced at $2.05 a gallon.
A clerk at a Pikeville gas station said gas prices fell at her station around 2 p.m. Thursday.
“Our gas had been as high as $1.85,” the clerk said. “Gas is so high in (West Virginia) because you’ve got no competition and they can charge what they want.”
In Danville this morning, one station was selling gas for $2.06 a gallon, while another was selling it for $1.99. Another station nearby was charging $2.05 for a gallon of regular unleaded.
In Williamson yesterday, a gallon of gas was $1.99, which was the price across the Kentucky border in South Williamson.
On Monday, Senator H. Truman Chafin (D-Mingo) called for an investigation by the state attorney general’s office into gas price gouging. Chafin cited lower gas prices in bordering states and the higher prices in West Virginia as oil prices continue to fall as the reason for his call for action.
