5 charged in drug bust on Brushy Fork

CHAPMANVILLE — Acting on a drug complaint, West Virginia State Troopers R.E. Stowers and M.A. Broadwater, busted a drug delivery ring on Brushy Fork on August 16.


Among those arrested included two residents of New York, Jaquan Cromwell, 24, and Clarissa Charlene Gillard, 31. Local residents arrested included John Montgomery, 35, of Lyburn, William Joseph Sumpter, 39, of Whitman and Michael Edward Stollings, 52, of Chapmanville (Brushy).


According to the criminal complaint filed in Magistrate’s Court, the officers knocked on the Brushy Fork residence in an attempt to speak with the occupants. When the door was opened, officers observed “two individuals run out of the living room towards the back of the residence.” Officers identified the two as Gillard and Montgomery.


After securing all the occupants, officers discovered that five bags of crack cocaine had allegedly been flushed down the toilet. Officers state that a written statement stating the same was received. The officers also discovered approximately $750 in U.S. currency on Gillard’s person.


Officers “determined that all the occupants of the residence had conspired to distribute the crack cocaine.


Charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and conspiracy were filed against Cromwell and Stollings. They both are being held in the Southwestern Regional Jail on a $50,000 bond.


Charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, conspiracy and obstructing an officer were filed against Gillard, Sumpter and Montgomery. They also are being held in the Southwestern Regional Jail on a $50,000 bond.


In other court news:


• Johnny Gene Williams, 21, was arrested and charged with battery and trespassing by W.Va. State Trooper T.R. Brumfield on August 15. He is being held at the Southwestern Regional Jail on a $5,000 bond.


• Nelson Richard Hall, 22, was arrested and charged with public intoxication, domestic assault and obstructing an officer on August 16. He was released on a $2,500 bond.


• Grover Scott Adams, 40, was arrested and charged with cultivation on August 9 and on July 23 he was arrested and charged with destruction of property, petit larceny, public intoxication and breaking and entering. He is being held on a $5,000 bon for the July 23 charges and a $15,000 bond for the August 9 charge.
