The Chapmanville Regional High School football team is ranked No. 8 in the state in the Charleston Daily Mail Preseason High School Football Poll which was released earlier in the week.
The Tigers, 9-4 and a Class AA state semifinalist last year was the only Logan County team to break into the top 10.
Class A Man, however, received a vote in the Single-A poll.
George Washington (13-1 last year) sits atop the Class AAA poll, while defending state champion Martinsburg is second. The Bulldogs were a perfect 14-0 last season.
Cabell Midland is third in Class AAA, while Morgantown is fourth and Spring Valley fifth. Parkersburg South, which beat Logan 51-8 in last year’s Class AAA playoff game at LHS, is ranked sixth in the state in 3A. Musselman is seventh, South Charleston eighth, Huntington ninth and Capital 10th.
Point Pleasant, a former Cardinal Conference team and a first-year Class AAA team, received five votes in the poll. Hurricane, University, Beckley, Lewis County, Shady Spring, Elkins, Parkersburg and Wheeling Park also received votes.
Class AAA Logan, 8-3 last season, did not receive any votes. The Wildcats play Huntington, Hurricane and Shady Spring this season.
In the Class AA poll, defending state champion Wayne, 12-2 last year, was the overwhelming pick at the No. 1 spot. The Pioneers, a Cardinal Conference team, garnered 17 out of the 18 first-place votes. Wayne is off in Week 1 of the season and open Aug. 31 against Chesapeake, Ohio.
Bridgeport, down from 3A, is ranked No. 2. Robert C. Byrd is third, Keyser fourth, Bluefield fifth, Fairmont sixth and Mingo Central seventh. The Mingo Central Miners, 5-5 last season in their first-ever football campaign, joins the Cardinal Conference this fall. MC opens at Wyoming East on Aug. 24.
Cardinal member Chapmanville is eighth, while Roane County is ninth and Oak Glen 10th. Chapmanville opens the season Aug. 24 at Sissonville.
East Fairmont, Grafton, Ravenswood, Ritchie County, Scott, Poca, River View, Liberty Harrison, Lincoln, Nicholas County and Frankfort also received votes.
Chapmanville plays Cardinal teams Wayne, Scott and Poca this season.
In the Class A poll, Wheeling Central (13-1 last year) is the pick for No. 1. The state powerhouse Maroon Knights grabbed all 18 first-place votes from the media.
Williamstown is second, Magnolia third, Madonna fourth and Wahama fifth. Moorefield is sixth, Greenbrier West seventh, Buffalo eighth, Fayetteville ninth and Bishop Donahue 10th.
Man received a vote while Tug Valley, down from 2A this season, got six votes. Clay-Battelle, Van, East Hardy, Tucker County, Wirt County, St. Marys, Valley Fayette, Pocahontas County, Meadow Bridge, Richwood and Notre Dame also received votes.
