Logan High School baseball team member Justin Oney has signed on to play collegiate baseball at WVU Tech.

Oney was a key pitcher the last four years for the Wildcats.

Last year, the right-hander was 0-1 with a 3.23 ERA and eight saves. Oney pitched 17.1 innings and allowed eight earned runs and 18 hits with 29 strikeouts and 11 walks.

At the plate, Oney had a .319 batting average with 13 RBI and 23 total base hits. He had five doubles and played in 28 games for 21-7 Logan.

“He did a heck of a job for us pitching and also we used him as a DH and he had some big hits for us,” Logan coach Roger Gertz said. “I expect him to go over there and do a great job. Justin is one of the hardest working kids that we’ve ever had in our program. He worked hard for two summers. He’s just a quality young man. We hate to lose him. He’s one of those young seniors that we wish we had for another year.”

Oney will likely be a relief pitcher at Tech.

“He’s got an excellent split finger pitch and fastball,” Gertz said. “He’s not overpowering but he’s also got a good slider. He gets a lot of people out.”

West Virginia is an NAIA independent and former member of the Mid-South Conference. WVU Tech had been a member of the WVIAC for many years.

The Golden Bears were 22-29 last year in their final season in the Mid-South.

WVU Tech’s head coach is Lawrence Nesselrodt, who enters his 29th season of college baseball next spring, including four years at Tech.

Oney joins Logan softball’s Taylor Norman at WVU Tech. Norman signed on to play with the Golden Bears’ softball team recently.

Last November, WVU Tech announced it was leaving the Mid-South Conference effective June 30. It will become an NAIA-affiliated independent team and has applied for admission to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.

Oney is planning on majoring in civil engineering at WVU Tech.
