DELBARTON — As they have for many years in the past, members of the Delbarton Homecoming Board of Directors, the Town Council and the Delbarton Kiwanis Board have kicked the plans and preparation for their 17th Annual Homecoming Festival into high gear, as they ready their town in preparation and anticipation of the large crowd expected to flock to their corner of Mingo County next week.
The Homecoming will begin on Tuesday, the 28th, with the Pet Show scheduled at 6 p.m., registration at 5:30. The event will take place in the Town Square, and will have a $10 entry fee. Dogs and cats only please!
On Thursday, all area young ladies are invited to enter the Beauty Pageant held inside the Delbarton Opry House, at 5 p.m. The theme for this year’s event is “country”, and all those vying for the title are requested to plan their attire with that in mind.
The cost to enter the Beauty Pageant will be $35, with an additional fee of $10 if the entrant wants to be considered for the Miss Photogenic trophy.
On Friday, August 31, those traveling to the Homecoming are welcomed to partake of the Hog Roast, Pinto Bean and Cornbread dinner slated to being at 5 p.m. inside the Town Square. The meal will be offered at no cost to the public. Also on Friday will be the Talent Show beginning at 6 p.m. (no entry fee), which will be followed by a Block Party set to begin at 8 p.m. Musical entertainment for the dance will be provided by “The Streetplayers”.
On Saturday, the main day for the Homecoming, all Arts and Crafts and Food Vendors ($25 booth space, per day, first come –first serve basis) will be setting up their displays and wares between the hours of 8 and 11 a.m. You may visit the eventbrite.com website to preregister for a booth space.
The Annual Car Show will begin registering their competitors at 8 a.m, with the show being held from 10 until 2 p.m. An entry fee of $15 per vehicle will be charged.
A highly anticipated event is the Kid’s Fishing Tournament (10 a.m. until noon), with registration beginning at 9 a.m. at the Kiwanis Park. Ages up to and including 15 are eligible to enter. Adults will not be allowed to fish during this time period. The first 100 children 10 years of age of under to register for the event will receive a free fishing rod and tackle box, courtesy of the Delbarton Kiwanis Club. Pigeon Creek will be stocked with catfish that morning to better the chances of those that participate to reel in the winning fish. Trophies will be awarded in age groups 1-5, 6-10 and 11-15 for the longest fish, smallest fish and most fish caught.
The Quilt Show Competition (no entry fee) will be held inside the Connolly Memorial Church sanctuary from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Numerous “Kid’s Games” will take place beside of the Delbarton Fire Department between the hours of 1 and 3 p.m., and the Kid’s Run will begin at 1 p.m., with registration starting at noon.
The Burch High School Alumni Reception will take place at the Connolly Memorial between the hours of 1 and 5 p.m. All those who attended and graduated from the former high school are encouraged to attend.
The parade thru downtown Delbarton will begin at 3 p.m., with lineup at the Delbarton Grade School. A fish fry (free to the public) will be held inside Town Square from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by a Bluegrass Sing that is scheduled to conclude at 11 p.m.
On Sunday, the final day of the festival, a “Community Feast” will be held in the parking area of the Opry House beginning at 4 p.m. Those attending the dinner can venture inside the Opry House at 5 p.m., for the start of the Annual Gospel Sing. The final event of the Homecoming will be a “Kid’s Movie Night” at the Delbarton City Hall.
