OLEN YORK JR.

CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. — Mr. Olen Lee York, Jr. 62 of Chapmanville, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012, at home surrounded by his family.

Olen was born January 31, 1950 at Holden, the oldest child and only son of Olen Lee and Joyce Spaulding York. He was the grandson of the late Issac and Biddie York and Herbert and Roxie Spaulding. In addition to his parents and grandparents, Olen was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Edsel and Aleen “Pat” Varney and nephew, Bert Van Compton II.

Olen graduated from Lenore High School in 1968. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1971 to 1973, was a member of local union 1751 of the United Mine Workers of America, and worked at the Wade Mine (Elkay Mining, Pittston Division) in Lyburn. He then worked for the West Virginia Public Service Commission from 1994 until his retirement. He was an alumnus of Marshall University where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History.

Olen faithfully attended the Chapmanville Church of God where he and Nancy were married in 1971 and was saved in 1980, was Assistant Adult Sunday School Teacher, and he was an avid reader, including devoted study of the Bible and U.S. Military History.

Olen is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Nancy Varney York; son, Olen Lee, his wife, Amy Fulks, and two granddaughters, Sara Elizabeth and Meredith LeAnne of Milton; son, Andrew Jason, his wife Dawn Adkins and granddaughter, Abigail Michelle, also of Milton; his loving sisters, Sherlyn (Allen) McGuire of Mt. Sterling, Ky., and Sandra (Allen) Parsley of Lenore; uncle, Bill York of Columbus, Ohio; his many nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of wonderful friends.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today at the Evans Funeral Home and Cremation Services with services beginning at 7 p.m. with Bishop Michael Davis officiating.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday for the family.

Pallbearers will be his sons, Olen Lee and Andrew, and Barry Blair, Mark Porter, Joe Stanley and Phillip Meade.

Honorary pallbearers will be his beloved brothers-in-law, Bert Compton, Allen Parsley, Allen McGuire and Scott Varney, close friends, Stanley Justice, Kenneth Dingess, Gary Muncy and Rev. Harry Dingess, and his co-workers, Gary Wilkerson, Sam Doss, Linford Nelson and Chris Dunlap.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions may be made to: Chapmanville Church of God, “Ministry to Israel“, PO Box 1258, Chapmanville, WV 25508.

Evans Funeral Home and Cremation Services at Chapmanville is serving the York Family.
