MAN — The Man Middle School football team improved to 3-0 on the season with Thursday night’s 37-14 win over county rival Chapmanville at Man’s George A. Queen Memorial Stadium.
Chapmanville dropped to 1-3 with the loss.
Coach Tootie Carter’s Pioneers started the game off with a bang with Kyle Browning’s 70-yard return for a touchdown on the game’s opening kick. Browning then added a 30-yard TD for his second score of the first quarter.
Tyler Grimmett added a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown for Man, which topped Milton in a game last weekend.
Dylan Smith was 6-for-9 passing for 76 yards for Chapmanville. Ryan Craddock had five carries for 45 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers. Ross Adkins ran for 26 yards and had three catches for a touchdown. Devin Vance had one catch that went for 38 yards.
Adam Vance had three tackles on the CMS defense. Austin Butcher, Evan Willis and Alex Oxley had one tackle and one fumble recovery each. Ross Adkins and Hunter Long each had two total tackles. Devin Vance also had a fumble recovery.
CMS coach James Barker said his Tigers got beat by a good team.
“We played a good Man team tonight. Hats off to Coach Carter and his kids. They played a good game,” Barker said. “Once again, we got off to a bad start. A few missed tackles on the kickoff and they run it back, then a shanked punt, we stand around and watch it and the player from Man picks it up and returns it for a touchdown. Our kids are in the right spots, they are just not making plays. The second half of the game, we played with a better attitude and the effort showed. We just have to keep working and getting better. There was a little improvement since last week. We have next week off due to a scheduling conflict which required us to play four games in three weeks. We told them after the game that if they wanted to see Man again, it was still possible, we just had to have a better attitude and want to win. I told them at halftime and after the game, that we were close to becoming a pretty good football team, it just comes down to attitude.”
The Tigers play again on Sept. 27 at home against the Poca Dots.

Logan 38, Winfield 20
The Logan Middle School football team ran its record to 3-0 on the season with Thursday night’s 38-20 victory over Winfield at home.
Noah Corbett had two carries for 61 yards and a touchdown and completed 4-of-9 passing for 110 yards and a TD pass to Tyler Browning to lead Logan. Browning had three catches for 85 yards and rushed four times for 51 yards, including a 35-yard TD run.
Daniel Browning had five rushes for 76 yards with a 60-yard touchdown for LMS. He also had two special teams touchdowns — one on an 81-yard kickoff return for a score and the other a 53-yard punt return for another score.
Also receiving a pass for the Timberwolves was Jace Watkins, who had a grab for 25 yards.
Chris Barbour kicked two extra points for Logan.
Jace Watkins led the LMS defense with eight tackles. Browning had five tackles, two pass breakups and one interception with a return of 35 yards. Goff had four tackles with one interception with a return of 45 yards. David Cruz had three tackle and three hurries. Also having tackles for the Timberwolves were Daniel and Jamel Minter with five each.
“The game plan was to come out fast and score quick, which we were able to execute perfectly. Ty played spectacular on both sides of the ball. As a team we made some mental mistakes, which is very correctable. We will have to check the record books as this may be the first 3-0 start for the school,” Logan coach Jared Voldness said.
The Timberwolves are scheduled to host Ravenswood next Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The JV team is slated to play Chapmanville at home on Tuesday night at 6.
